Preparing to Move
Make a list of items such as boxes, tape, newsprint or bubble wrap you may need to begin packing. Breathe deep, you have this. Moving can be stressful but careful planning and patience can help to make your move less stressful.
Create a list of labeled boxes for easy reference. Color coordinating or numbering each box is a great trick to stay organized. Notate which room the box belongs in (example: bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc.), this will help you stay organized when you are unpacking. Also, gather up plenty of sturdy, corrugated boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape and marker pens. Determine if you might need furniture covers, mattress covers or if you intend to use shelving to in your storage unit.
While packing, try to use the same size boxes to easily stack. Fill each box tightly to avoid the boxes from collapsing. Be mindful not to overpack the boxes and to fill voids with blankets, towels or newsprint. To maximize protection, seal each box with tape.
When packing dishes or glassware, nest bowls or cups and stand plants, saucers and platters on their edge. Be sure to wrap all glassware and place near the top of the box to help prevent breakage. Remember to mark the box containing glassware so no heavy items are placed on top.
When packing books or documents, lay the flat. To prevent moisture absorption, do not sit boxes directly on concrete floors. Be mindful to manage the weight of each box. Books, documents and some kitchen items can become heavy if packed in a large box. Try to use smaller boxes for books or tools and limit the weight to around 30 lbs.
For storing Holiday Decorations, plastic tubs are a great option. They can easily be stacked on top of one another and are usually more sturdy than boxes.
Start early and take your time while packing. It is easier to start packing items that are not used often at first and leaving everyday items to pack toward the end.
